Why test your reaction time?

It can be hard to tell exactly how tired you really are. You might feel "fine," but your nervous system could be operating at a significant deficit. A reaction time test bypasses your subjective feeling of alertness and measures your raw cognitive processing speed.

Studies show that after just 24 hours without sleep, or several nights of restricted sleep, your reaction time can degrade to a level equivalent to a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.10% — which is legally impaired.

If your score indicates you are sleep-deprived, the best fix is to calculate an optimal bedtime for tonight to start paying back your sleep debt.

Frequently asked questions

How does reaction time relate to sleep deprivation? +

Sleep deprivation directly impairs your central nervous system, slowing down how quickly your brain processes visual information and triggers a motor response. This is why driving tired can be as dangerous as driving drunk.

What is a normal reaction time? +

For a healthy, well-rested adult, an average visual reaction time is typically between 200ms and 250ms. Anything above 300ms often indicates cognitive fatigue or sleep deprivation.

Can I improve my reaction time? +

Yes, the most effective way to improve a fatigue-induced slow reaction time is to get 7-9 hours of continuous sleep. Caffeine can provide a temporary boost, but it does not replace the need for sleep.
