What is a chronotype test?

A chronotype test reveals whether you're a natural early bird, night owl, or somewhere in between. Unlike personality quizzes, chronotype science is grounded in circadian biology — the 24-hour rhythm that governs when you feel sleepy, alert, hungry, and focused.

Dr. Michael Breus popularized four chronotype animals in his book The Power of When: Lions (early risers), Bears (the solar-following majority), Wolves (night owls), and Dolphins (light, restless sleepers). Our free chronotype quiz uses eight research-informed questions to identify your type.

Why knowing your chronotype matters

If you've ever asked "am I a morning person", the answer shapes everything from your ideal bedtime to when you should schedule important meetings. Fighting your chronotype — like a Wolf forcing a 6 AM wake-up — creates chronic social jet lag, poor sleep quality, and reduced performance.

Lions thrive with early bedtimes around 9:30 PM and morning workouts. Bears do best with conventional schedules and mid-morning focus blocks. Wolves need evening-friendly routines and should protect their peak hours after 5 PM. Dolphins require strict sleep hygiene and consistent wind-down rituals.

How our sleep chronotype quiz works

Each question targets a different dimension of your circadian rhythm: natural wake time, energy peaks, sleep latency, morning grogginess, ideal bedtime, sleep duration needs, free-day behavior, and tolerance for late-night work. Your answers accumulate scores across all four types, and your highest score determines your result.

After completing the quiz, you'll get a personalized profile with ideal bedtime and wake time ranges, peak performance windows, and three actionable sleep tips. Then use our sleep cycle calculator to find your exact bedtime based on 90-minute cycles.

Chronotype vs. sleep need

Your chronotype determines when you sleep best, not how much you need. A Wolf might need 9 hours starting at midnight, while a Lion needs 7 hours starting at 9:30 PM. Both can be healthy — the key is alignment. Combine your chronotype result with our weekly sleep scheduler to build a consistent plan that respects your biology.

Frequently asked questions

What is a chronotype? +

A chronotype is your natural tendency to sleep and wake at certain times, driven by your internal circadian clock. The four main chronotypes — Lion, Bear, Wolf, and Dolphin — describe different sleep-wake patterns.

Am I a morning person or night owl? +

Morning people (Lions) naturally wake before 6 AM and peak before noon. Night owls (Wolves) feel best after 6 PM and prefer bedtimes after midnight. Most people are Bears, falling somewhere in between.

Can I change my chronotype? +

Your chronotype has a strong genetic component, but light exposure, consistent sleep schedules, and meal timing can shift your clock by 30–60 minutes. Major changes require sustained effort over weeks.
